Linux Migration Starter Kit
Overview
This is the kit perfect for a newcomer to Linux and open source software in general. It comes with just what you need to gently ease into the environment you may stick with forever. Included is TheOpenCD for Windows, 2 full LiveCDs, 1 mini LiveCD, a complete 5 CD SuSE Linux Professional, 2 DVDs, and a printed 6 page cheat sheet.
Accommodate Yourself With Free Software in Windows
Before you tackle something as big as an entire operating system, why not acquaint yourself with individual Free Software programs in Windows? TheOpenCD lets you do just this, by bundling the best open source programs that run on Windows in one convenient CD. With its clean, user-friendly interface you can add and remove software, view screen shots and read information on the programs.
Once you are comfortable with the programs at hand, why not move on to some first hand experience with a bootable CD containing the full Linux operating environment.
TheOpenCD is a collection of high quality Free and Open Source Software. The programs run in Windows and cover the most common tasks such as word processing, presentations, e-mail, web browsing, web design, and image manipulation.
KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos.
Use Linux Without Installing Anything!
You don't have to make the plunge of installing a single thing with these disks! Simply put the disk in your CD-Rom drive and reboot. Without touching the hard drive (in fact, you could run it with no hard drive at all), the CD boots into a Linux environment all built directly on the CD. They also make for great recovery disks, in case the need ever arrives.
In addition to the full size LiveCDs, you'll even get a miniature, 3" LiveCD containing Slax Linux. This is perfect to carry around with you anywhere you go, ensuring you always have a Linux environment on hand!
Knoppix is ideal for general purpose use and as a recovery disk. Gnoppix has a sleek desktop with many office and end-user applications. On the other hand, Slax is useful by being so small and portable. It also runs a lighter desktop, so it will run well on older hardware with less memory and processing power than the other live CDs.
Gnoppix is a Linux live CD based upon Ubuntu Linux. It can be compared to Knoppix but GNOPPIX uses GNOME as desktop environment.
SLAX is a small bootable CD containing the Linux operating system, all fitting on a 3" Mini-CD.
SuSE Linux Professional
By now you should be quite comfortable using Linux and its accompanying applications. The final destination is to install Linux onto your hard drive. For this, you have SuSE Linux Professional. This is an ideal distribution because it contains 5 CDs of nearly everything you'll need, from word processors to IM software to web browsers. Not only is it complete, it offers one of the easiest installation programs around. With its auto-detection and intuitive graphical installer, SuSE is just as easy, if not easier to install than Windows!
The stable and secure core system of SUSE LINUX features a number of major enhancements. For example, the new kernel 2.6 and the new KDE 3.2 provide quicker access to data.
Fedora Core 4 DVD
In addition to SuSE, you might like Fedora Core. The Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source project. The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. The Red Hat engineering team participates in the building of Fedora Core so you get quality, secure software. Fedora Core is intended to be a logical upgrade path for previous users of Red Hat Linux whose needs are consistent with the objectives of the Fedora Project. This makes Fedora and optimal choice for a Red Hat like distribution. You will get a DVD containing Fedora with over 4 CDs worth of software, plus it acts as a rescue disk.
Fedora Core 4 is the latest and greatest in desktop technology from Red Hat and the best of the open source community.
Documentation
Although the disks included in this package make things as easy as possible, it's always good to have some printed information in front of you. Included for free is a 6 page "cheat sheet" to the Linux command line, which will prove invaluable. Of course, you could always browse our documentation section or use the Google to get all the information you'll ever need.
